At 78, Patrick Demarchelier, French fashion photographer, dies

Demarchelier captured Princess Diana, Beyonce, and Madonna over a long career

Patrick Demarchelier, the fashion photographer who worked with high-profile figures including Diana, Princess of Wales, has died at the age of 78.

On Thursday, his representatives announced his death via Instagram. “It is with great sorrow that we announce Patrick Demarchelier’s passing on 31 March 2022 at the age of 78,” read the post. His wife Mia, his three children Gustaf, Arthur, and Victor, as well as three grandchildren, are his survivors.

Demarchelier was the one who created the cover of Vogue’s December 1991 issue that featured Diana. He also worked for Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, as well many top fashion magazines like Rolling Stone and Elle. He helped shoot advertisement campaigns for Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Tommy Hilfiger, and Carolina Herrera.

During his career, Demarchelier photographed a string of high-profile celebrities including Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Madonna.

In 2018, however, seven models accused Demarchelier of sexual assault. These allegations Demarchelier dismissed, calling them “ridiculous”. Conde Nast, the publisher, ended its collaboration with Demarchelier in response to these allegations.

He was featured in 2006’s film, The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly, an editor of huge major fashion magazine seeks him out.

Vera Wang, a US designer, and models such as Bella Hadid and Cindy Crawford paid tribute to Demarchelier. Wang stated that she was “saddened to the core” by the news, and would “always treasure” Demarchelier’s kindness and talent.

“I am deeply saddened. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and wife. I pray that he may rest in peace,” said Wang.

Sam McKnight, a celebrity hairstylist, also said that he had so much to thank Demarchelier. He replied to the original post, “Oh my God, I’m so sorry to hear that. I had the most wonderful times with Patrick. Innumerable iconic photos, amazing memories, a lifetime full of laughter. I have so many things to thank him for.”

He added, “Oh, Patrick, how did you make us laugh. I am grateful for being with you on this wonderful journey. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Hadid stated, “I am grateful of being in front your lens. Most gentle, legendary, soft, but full of life. Patrick, you will be missed. Rest in peace.”

Sharing pictures of herself taken by Demarchelier, Crawford said: “Rest in peace, @patrickdemarchelier. Many thanks for the beautiful and timeless memories.”

Kate Hudson, said that she enjoyed working with the photographer for years: “So many memories. I had the pleasure of being photographed by Patrick often and always enjoyed him and his team so much,”
