The preppy look is often associated with the classic East coast style. It has been around for decades and features a variety of staples like vests, cable-knit sweaters, and other items. The preppy look is being updated for spring-summer 2022. It’s no longer associated with traditional references.

A new type of preppy will be welcomed in the seasons to come: casual, comfortable, and experimenting with proportions and contrasts. Preppy fashion has evolved to accommodate the need for comfort and easy layers over the past year. We are seeing more oversized shapes and less restrictive cuts.

There are many variations to this trend: we have seen cosy knitwear, textures, plush hands, dropped shoulders, and loose fittings. Brands are also opting for bolder colours when it comes to colour. Next summer, bright reds, deep purples and vibrant yellows will be a part of the wardrobes. Designers who choose neutral colors like Brunello Cucinelli have been inspired to play with shapes and textures, which is a great way to relive the preppy look.

Suit trousers are now straight-legged, and shirts and tie are worn with shorts. Shoes are also getting an update. Boat, derby, and loafers are still popular, but they have a little more edge. We have seen traditional preppy footwear with lug soles and utility-inspired details.

Pair classic preppy pieces like the sweater vest or fitted shirt with contrasting pieces next summer. Prada’s smart button-down is paired with a bucket-hat. A knitted vest is adorned with mid-calf socks at Mans, and a pair of sandals at Mans. Belt bags are used instead of leather satchels to accessorize outfits. Casablanca chose a casual varsity jacket with loafers and suit shorts.

You can also embrace the preppy trend by leaving your buttoned cuffs unbuttoned for a cool, casual look such as at Egonlab. Ernest W. Baker and Paul Smith, on the other hand, chose more traditional tailoring but elevated it with shades of yellow and purple for tonal looks.

Preppy style will always be a part of men’s clothing, but it will shift to a more casual and relaxed style for the spring-summer 2022 season.
