SmartShop Pick and Go, a contactless, check out-free shopping service, has been launched by Sainsbury’s.

The new option is part of SmartShop’s in-store digital innovation. It builds on SmartShop’s success last year, which grew 173 per cent. SmartShip Pick and go uses Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology.

Customers simply need to scan a QR code in their SmartShop app to access the service. This code is linked to their debit or credit card. All items taken off the shelves by customers are added to their virtual shopping cart. They can also remove them if they are not used. As they leave the store, the customer scans their QR code and has their credit card charged.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, contactless shopping has seen a rise in demand. SmartShop is now available in 1,400 Sainsbury’s shops. This means that 30 percent of all sales can be made through the app. This is double the amount of last year.

Clo Moriarty, Sainsbury’s retail and digital director, said that they are always trying to find new ways to make shopping easier and more convenient for customers. We are thrilled to launch SmartShop Pick and Go which provides contactless, check out-free shopping for our customers and we look forward to their feedback.”

Sainsbury’s also saw a strong rise in sales of its apparel brand, Tu Clothing. The 28-week period ending September 18 saw sales rise by 33.6 percent compared to one year ago. The increase in sales was 9.1 percent compared to the previous two years. Online shopping was responsible for a 70% increase in sales.
