Tommy Hilfiger, an American designer, has teamed up with VF-owned Timberland to create a capsule collection that pays homage the colorful signature styles of the ’90s.

The Tommy x Timberland capsule consists of clothing, footwear, and accessories. It is described as a creative clash between the American heritage of Tommy Hilfiger’s Tommy Hilfiger and Timberland’s authentic outdoor aesthetic and Timberland’s work aesthetic.

Drop 1 is a 17-piece capsule made up of selected pieces from the archives. It will be launching on October 26th.

Tommy Hilfiger said in a statement that “This partnership with Timberland was such a creative adventure and a long-awaited. It was great to relive the optimistic, “anything is possible” energy of the 1990s with Timberland. Our brands were shaped by culture, which in turn shaped the fashion landscape.”

Christopher Raeburn is the global creative director of Timberland. He said: “The power and beauty of collaboration is bringing together the best brands have to offer, then pushing boundaries in order to create something completely different, together. These pieces were instantly identifiable as Tommy and Timberland. It’s like having a cultural memory album, but with a progressive lens.”

The brand’s debut collection is a celebration of nineties heritage. It also echoes back at the hip-hop scene that helped each brand make their way.

Highlights include the varsity jacket that can be reversibly worn with a Timberland fleece and Tommy Hilfiger’s varsity jacket; the voluminous, recycled parka with feminised utility-style; and the Timberland 6-inch boot with the Tommy Hilfiger flag added to the zip overlay.

A stripe shirt dress, a recycled-cotton-archive-inspired T-shirt Dress with remixed logo branding and accessories like a duffle bag or bum-bag are also included in the collection.

The Timberland orange and wheat are a great complement to the Tommy Hilfiger heritage palette of red, white, and blue. A new hybrid logo was created by combining the emblems of both brands.

Lee Holman, executive vice-president and global creative director at Timberland said that “To celebrate the clash between the two brands, I fused my signature flag with the Timberland Tree, creating a hybrid logo which runs through the collection.

“Colour was an interesting juxtaposition. From the Timberland wheat and orange colouring, and clashing with them with our American primary colors of red, white, and blue – just as consumers wore the Tommy palette with their wheat Timberlands back in the ’90s.”

Hilfiger said that co-designing the collection was an exciting and educational experience. The best thing about working with two well-respected brands is the ability to take our brand DNAs, which are instantly recognisable, and mix them together to create something new and bold.

The collection’s design and craftsmanship show that there is a lot of creativity within this tension. Collaboration is about bringing out the best of each brand, sharing our strengths and pushing boundaries.

Tommy.com, Timberland.com, and select Tommy Hilfiger or Timberland stores around the world will have the TommyxTimberland collection. You can also order it through selected wholesale partners starting October 26. TommyxTimberland Drop 2 will be available in November.
