The bob is the most popular hairstyle of 2020, with styles ranging from shorter jaw-grazers to more slender shoulder-skimming styles. The latest version, which you should have on your radar, combines two of our favorite things: an excellent cut with a simple, French girl finish. Oui, bonjour to the French hairstyle.
Luke Hersheson CEO of Hershesons, says that historically, a bob was defined by its length, chin, and jaw. “But now, I believe that Parisian hair or French hair is about feeling effortless and celebrating the parts that are often ‘wrong or imperfect.” This is French girl hair at its best.
Hersheson explains that the trick to creating “shattered ends”, which feel like they were cut randomly with a knife, is to make them look less professional. He says, “It’s about taking the idea that the cut was precise and perfected off the whole look.” He uses a razor for slicing lots of chunky, fragmented ends. The cut is kept shorter at the front to avoid an A-line ‘Karen’ feel. Invisible layers are created to encourage natural movement.
Hersheson says that the cut is suitable for every face shape, age, and hair texture. “Are you a centre-parting skater girl, like Drew Barrymore?” He asks, “Or are you more Demi Moore in the ’80s?” “Or there are the girls who love the look today – Cara Taylor, Hannah Kleit and Kaia Gerber – all of them do a great new version.”
The beauty of the French hairstyle – or should it be called the Frob? It requires very little styling. Hersheson emphasizes the importance and beauty of a well-cut haircut. Without it, no product can make something easy and cool. He does recommend Hershesons Everything Cream to “kill Frizz” and create separation. The hairdresser does 80 percent of the work. We like it that way.
